Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Dundalk District Curriculum

The science curriculum in Dundalk helps elementary school students develop the skills required to conduct scientific inquiry and develop understanding about the natural world. Students learn to observe the world around them and utilize those observations to form questions. Learners acquire the ability to describe what can be learned through observations, as well as through experiments and investigations.

To meet the visual arts requirement for graduation, students in middle school can participate in theatre studies. Students learn about aesthetics, specifically as they pertain to the perception, interpretation, and performance of dramatic pieces. Children examine various genres of theatre, and explore pieces by major playwrights such as Shakespeare. An analysis of the characteristics of theatre is undertaken as well. Students compare similarities between characters and themes, and identify the ways in which the culture, time period, and social context in which the play was written will have a significant impact on character and theme development.

Students that volunteer their time to serve others come away from such experiences feeling a sense of pride, accomplishment, and fulfillment. The act of giving back teaches children about what it means to be a productive member of society, and encourages civic responsibility. Serving the community is a great way to improve ties with peers, community members, and local organizations as well. Volunteerism offers children the chance to learn new skills that can help them land jobs down the road. Having volunteer experience is also advantageous when applying to colleges and for financial aid. There are mental and physical health benefits too. Studies show that volunteerism improves mood, reduces stress, and enhances self-esteem. And depending on the activity, volunteers can get a great workout that improves their physical health.
