Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Dunmore District Curriculum

Because some students need special helps that are not available in a regular classroom, there are programs for gifted students to be challenged, there are special education programs for those who need a modified curriculum or study situation, and resources for students who are learning English as a Second Language. These programs are offered after students are identified who need the assistance and a personalized learning plan is made for them to progress with. The goal is to ensure that every student can meet all learning standards detailed within the curriculum.

Students in the Dunmore School District are taught core courses in reading, writing, math, and science. They are also exposed to various arts, including music, theater, dance, and visual arts. Additionally, students have classes in social studies, finances, technology, health, physical education, the fine and performing arts, and many extracurricular activities to also participate in. With these classes, students are able to receive an education based on standards designed to prepare them for college and career.

Chalk Talk: How to Understand Math

Let’s face it; math can be tricky. But if it is understood, the mystery can be left behind and replaced by a certain love, or at least tolerance, of the topic. Students have many different learning styles, and because of this, it may be important to find resources which can help with math understanding that fits into that learning style. If students are visual, finding examples and proofs that work out the math problem right in front of them could be helpful. If students do well with memorizing, it’s fine to memorize the formulas after having the problem explained. Even if students don’t remember why the formula works, they will remember that it does and that they’ve seen it. Tactile learners can often use manipulatives to understand concepts such as times tables. There are so many ways to help students in understanding math, even walking up and down stairs for addition and subtraction can help. A good teacher, tutor, or knowledgeable third party or adult can often significantly help students who are struggling with math. Help them understand and it will go a long way.
