Dysart District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The local districts use the Ontario Curriculum, a standards-based and student-centered framework for teaching and learning. The curriculum guides for each subject set about to explain what students will learn each year and how that will progress to a strong understanding of the subject’s concepts and principles. Core subjects like English, Math, and Science are used to teach students fundamentals and to prepare them with thinking and learning strategies they will need in other subject areas. In English, students develop their abilities to read and analyze both fiction and non-fiction. They are taught how to write essays that fully develop their ideas and they are given opportunities to write for personal, reflective, and creative purposes.

We currently cover the following Dysart-area school districts: Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board and Trillium Lakelands District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Dysart District Curriculum

Math has been laid out so that students have a strong background in problem-solving before they move on to the advanced work of algebra, geometry, and data analysis in high school. In the Math classes in grade 9, students learn about algebraic expressions and relationships, geometric functions, and ways to analyze quantitative information. With these mathematic reasoning skills in place, students are prepared for other process-oriented and technical subjects.

In Science, students learn content, principles, and processes inherent to the fields of biology, earth and environment, and basic physical science. High school science begins with the study of these topics, preparing students for the focused classes in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science, and Earth and Space Science. These subjects are increasingly infused with options for students to learn about technology, its uses, ways to develop it, and how to understand the nature of technology within our society.

Chalk Talk: Preparing for the SAT/ACT

There are different ways for students to prepare for the SAT/ACT. One way is to sign up for a test prep class. This type of preparation is best for the student that needs structure when studying. These classes generally meet every week at the same time of day. This is also good for the student that is quiet and does not like to ask questions. When in a class they can benefit from the questions and answers that come from other students. Test prep classes are also good for students that want to improve their score from previous tests. Some students may benefit from a private tutor. A tutor will give a student individual attention, as they are the only student at each session. Tutors can also design each lesson to aid the student the most. Accountability is also a plus as tutors can make sure the student stays up with their preparation. It is important that parents make sure that the tutor can offer references who can vouch for their success in preparing other students.
