Chalk Talk: College Application Types

There are several different types of college applications each with their own specific requirements. The most common is the Regular Decision application. These can have a deadline as early as December 1st—which used to be the standard. But in recent years, many schools have shifted them to later and later. Early Decision is a popular one. The deadline is usually November 1st. Aside from being early, the biggest difference for Early Decision applications is that they require applicants to commit to attending that college if accepted. Early Action is similar to Early Decision, though often due November 15th, except that Early Action doesn’t require that commitment. Rolling applications are one of the most open types. They don’t exactly have a deadline, rather students apply during a range of dates and receive a response usually within two to three weeks, which is much quicker than other application types. Not every college offers every type, of course.
