Chalk Talk: Mentoring Benefits Students

Mentoring programs can benefit students in many ways. Kids that are mentored have an older student to look up to, someone that they can learn to trust and rely on when they face difficult times. Mentored students also learn valuable skills that promote success in school. Mentors can help younger students learn how to study effectively, provide tips on how to complete assignments on time, and give insight into how to address academic problems in an appropriate manner. Mentors benefit from the mentoring relationship as well. Older students have an opportunity to make a positive impact on a fellow student’s life. Likewise, mentors play an active role in improving the climate in their school by forming positive relationships with students with whom they might not otherwise socialize.
