Educating Our Parents: Understanding the East Greenbush District Curriculum
The learning standards are designed to insure that students learn how to read widely and attentively in variety of genres and mediums. They also support students’ development of important literacy skills such as writing, speaking, and listening. Literacy skills are integrated with other areas of learning. In writing, students may draft resumes, business plans, or scientific findings. Language usage is also a focus of these standards. Students are required to understand and use proper English when writing or speaking. They must also be able to choose correct vocabulary and word options for their varying audiences.
The math standards are designed to insure that students in early grades have a firm grasp of core mathematics concepts such as problem solving, pattern recognition, and numeration. Chalk Talk: Tips for a Healthy School Lunch
Putting together a school lunch is a tricky task. The men and women who put lunches together have to satisfy principals who are looking at schools’ bottom lines, parents who are looking at children’s waistlines, and children who can’t stomach the food they have to eat when they leave the lunch line. With all of this, it is no wonder that schools lunches are said to be both too expensive and not expensive enough and both too nutritious and not nutritious enough. School lunches are the example of a kind of compromise, the kind in which everybody, regardless of knowledge or expertise, has a say. The best way to fix school lunches is to consider the dietary and health requirements of the students, and then create kid-friendly meals using better ingredients. Rather than chicken nuggets, students can have grilled chicken strips in a salad bar. If the culture is created where eating well is the only option, that's what kids will do.
