East Greenwich District and Curriculum
The key words associated with the East Greenwich Public Schools are respect, achieve, and succeed. The Greenwich Public Schools is transitioning to incorporate the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) into its curriculum. The district acknowledges the importance of health and wellness, technology, and media to the success of the standards in its schools as well as a component of preparation for adult life.
We currently cover the following East Greenwich-area school district: East Greenwich Public Schools.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the East Greenwich District Curriculum
The CCSS promotes six changes in English Language Arts literacy from previous curricula. Under the new guidelines, students will be expected to read as much non-fiction as fiction, educate themselves about the world through reading, pay close attention when reading difficult material, provide evidence in discussions of texts, create non-fiction using research and evidence, and increase their vocabulary of academic terms. The development of writing skills that can used for different audiences is also a major focus.
The Mathematics components of the new standards also highlight six changes to previous curricula. With the new standards, students are presented with fewer main topics, but they are expected to explore and master these standards with greater depth. Skills will build within a grade level and continue into higher grades. Students will be expected to perform mathematical tasks with speed and accuracy. Students should “really know” the material and be able to “really do” it without support.

Chalk Talk: Pets and Responsibility
Standing in front of the pet store, you may be struck with love at first sight. Whether it is a bunny’s floppy ears, a puppy’s liquid brown eyes, or the playful antics of the fluffy kittens, you may be begging your family to adopt a pet without delay. However, pets are a large responsibility. It is important as a family to discuss the cost and care that will be necessary by everyone to take care of a pet. Some have adopted pets, only to find that they are more work than anticipated. How can you find out if you are ready to take on the responsibility of a pet? If you have a neighbor or close friend who has a pet, why not pitch in to clean, feed, and exercise the pet for a month or so? You will determine the amount of work involved and if you are ready to commit to having a pet of your own. Also, the borrowed pet is sure to enjoy the extra attention!
