Educating Our Parents: Understanding the East Gwillimbury District Curriculum
In Math, the broad goals for student learning include the ability to take on a problem and determine the best method for solving it, understanding mathematic relationships and using such information in abstract mathematic reasoning, and to be able to select tools and solve problems precisely. In Science, students learn fact-based, concept-based and procedural knowledge in areas of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, Earth and Space Science, the Environment, and Technology.
The English curriculum's goal is that students are able to analyze and evaluate information, recognize divergent points of view, and develop the communication skills so that they may express themselves clearly. Students are also expected to read in order to learn about the world and develop cultural awareness and increase the range of their perspectives. The non-fiction reading goals include using non-fiction both to learn and also to support students own assertions about issues they are writing or speaking about. Research skills and the ability to properly reference materials are a key factor in the English curriculum, preparing students for the expectations of college academics.

Chalk Talk: What Are Core Competencies?
Core competencies are the abilities that we have and develop that provide a foundation for understanding the world around us and being able to perform necessary functions. Core competencies are the skills we have which we are able to bring to what we choose to engage in. That being, all students have core competencies, but they may be very different. This presents both a challenge and an opportunity for teaching. The goal is to get to students to use their natural abilities while also developing new ones. Group work is ideal for helping students to develop core competencies as it offers an opportunity for them to observe other students using their core competencies. As with many skills, the opportunity to see it modeled is highly beneficial for students.
