Chalk Talk: What Are Core Competencies?

Core competencies are the abilities that we have and develop that provide a foundation for understanding the world around us and being able to perform necessary functions. Core competencies are the skills we have which we are able to bring to what we choose to engage in. That being, all students have core competencies, but they may be very different. This presents both a challenge and an opportunity for teaching. The goal is to get to students to use their natural abilities while also developing new ones. Group work is ideal for helping students to develop core competencies as it offers an opportunity for them to observe other students using their core competencies. As with many skills, the opportunity to see it modeled is highly beneficial for students.
