Educating Our Parents: Understanding the East Hanover District Curriculum

The Common Core State Standards govern what students learn at each grade level in language arts and math classes. The New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards provide guidance for student learning in the following areas: technology, science, 21st Century life and careers, visual and performing arts, health and physical education, world languages and social studies. These standards also provide recommendations for the delivery of quality lessons and development of assessments to gauge student progress.

The social studies curriculum provides students opportunities to learn about the American experience in the modern world. Students learn about the fall of Communism and explore America’s role in bringing democracy to Eastern Europe and the Soviet Bloc. Students analyze our nation’s dependence of foreign oil and debate ways to wean ourselves from that dependence. Students study the role of the United Nations and examine how its goals are often aligned with the foreign policy goals of the United States.

Chalk Talk: Benefits of Early Childhood Education

A good early education is key for the development of important academic, social and emotional skills that children need to be as successful as possible. Children who participate in quality early education programs begin kindergarten with foundational skills for learning, such as basic reading, writing and math skills. They also have more advanced social skills and exhibit greater capacity to express emotions in a healthy manner. These students go on to outpace their peers in acquisition of academic skills and higher ordered thinking skills. Students who attend early education programs are far less likely to repeat grades, be identified for special education services or drop out of school. In the long term, these students are more likely to attend college, make more and own their own homes.
