Chalk Talk: A Lesson on Friendship Using a Mo Willems Book

Acclaimed children’s author Mo Willems’s book Amanda & Her Alligator is a great book to use for an early childhood (ages 3-5) lesson on friendship. The teacher will read the book Amanda & Her Alligator to the class, and after that, he or she may ask the students whether they remember any friends from the book. They may recall Amanda and Alligator, Alligator and Panda, and Amanda and Panda. The class may also discuss the types of activities that the friends in the book do with each other, such as dressing up. Then, the teacher may ask students to think about their best friend and draw a picture of that friend. Students may be asked questions such as what does it means to be a friend, what do they like about their friend, what do they do with their friend (these can be related to the activities the characters in Amanda & Her Alligator do together), and what their friend has done to make them feel good. The class will discuss the pictures they drew as well as their responses to these questions.
