Educating Our Parents: Understanding the East Lyme District Curriculum
The Common Core Standards seek to increase the rigor across all grade levels and subject and deepen each students understanding about a topic. In doing so, they decrease the number of topics required at each grade level to allow teachers to provide students the opportunity to truly understand the content. Then the curriculum is built upon year after year to foster students' depth of knowledge.
In English, there is a heavy focus on reading, writing, and speaking comprehension. Mastery of this leads to advancement in other content subjects as students can critically read and express themselves in all subjects. In Mathematics, topics range from areas of computational sense, geometric and spatial sense, algebraic thinking, and knowledge of ways to analyze and manipulate data. The lessons contained within these topics allow students to develop their abstract and quantitative reasoning abilities, preparing them for many advanced pursuits.

I just wanted to send a quick note to say thank-you! My son is very impressed with his tutor and looks forward to each session. What’s particularly amazing about this is our son has never really looked forward to math or school for that matter!

Chalk Talk: Parent Involvement Does Not End with Graduation
Studies are beginning to show that parental involvement in their child’s college education has a positive impact. College students who have a close relationship with their parents throughout college report having better satisfaction with their college experience. While it doesn’t mean you should sleep in your child’s dorm room and follow them to class, it means continuing to take an interest in what they are studying and how they are doing in their class. More often than not it means being a sounding board and support system as they make their final transition to becoming an adult.
