Chalk Talk: Incorporating Hands On Activities for Students

For some students, tactile and hands on learning is supplemental. For others it is fundamental to their understanding. For students who need to touch and experience material to learn it, hands on activities are key whether in or out of the classroom. If your student needs a hands-on approach to learning, find ways to provide it even if it can only be done at home. Using play dough to model things, blocks and manipulatives for math, scrabble boards for practicing spelling, all of these can assist students who need that extra hands-on aspect. Sometimes, even just stopping reading and stretching or doing some other brief activity can provide the proper mental stimulation for a student. If your child is a strong kinesthetic or tactile learner, talk to their teachers to see if they have suggestions or can help your student in class as well as their private studying time.
