Chalk Talk: Get the Most Out of Financial Aid

With the expense of college at an all time high, many parents need to find as much financial aid for their college-bound student as possible. The process of obtaining financial aid begins with filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or the FAFSA. This document is available online and must be filled out and submitted to your child’s colleges of choice. Once received, educational institutions will use the information on the FAFSA to determine their proposed award package. When submitting the FAFSA, it’s most prudent to do so as soon as possible. Many colleges distribute their financial aid on a first-come, first-served basis, so having your child’s information in early may get them more money. Also be sure to fill out the FAFSA in its entirety. It is a long document that requires a lot of information, so accidentally skipping something is both likely and common. If you aren’t sure that your family’s financial need will be evident in the FAFSA, include a supplementary letter explaining any extenuating circumstances.
