Educating Our Parents: Understanding the East Orange District Curriculum

On the elementary level, ELA instruction focuses on five key areas: reading, writing, listening, speaking and language. Students learn from a variety of written and recorded materials, such as short stories, plays, poems and songs. In the middle school, students cultivate their literacy and learn to efficiently express themselves in writing and speaking. In the high school, students’ narrative skills continue to grow and they learn to incorporate narrative elements effectively into arguments and informative texts.

In Mathematics, instruction focuses on the areas of base ten, numbers and operations, algebraic thinking, geometry, fractions and measurement. In middle school, students further study the number system and geometry, as well as ratios and proportions, expressions and equations, and statistics and probability. In high school, students learn advanced concepts in numbers, algebra and geometry as well as functions and statistics.

Chalk Talk: Classic Games Reinforce Academics

In a technological world, it is sometimes hard to remember that not all games require a computer, phone or android device. Some of the most classic board games are still around, and continue to help kids build reading and math skills (and learn to play well with others!). Word games like Scrabble, Pictionary and Scattegories build spelling, language and vocabulary. Uno reinforces colors, numbers and one-to-one correspondence. Hi Ho Cherry Oh incorporates simple math and counting skills. Games like Monopoly and Pay Day help older kids learn budgeting, math and reading. Also, games like Clue help children exercise deductive reasoning skills. When your student needs some extra time brushing up on skills, remember the value of board games.
