Educating Our Parents: Understanding the East Point District Curriculum
The overall goal of this district is to prepare students for the world they will enter upon graduation from High School. This is achieved by continually building upon information that is learned from year to year; culminating in total literacy and skill attainment by the time students’ graduate from this district. This school system also hosts several Magnet Schools and an outstanding record of academic achievement.
Curriculum focus areas are Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and English/Language Arts. The focus across each area is complete and total literacy skill attainment. This means that regardless of the class or subject students will be required to read technical texts and write in various formats about the subject that they are studying. In Mathematics they will be reading and writing about mathematics and the same will hold true in Science, and Social Studies. Through this focus on literacy, students will be more equipped to deal with the world they will enter.

Chalk Talk: Benefits of Community Service
We are all part of a community. Children need to understand and experience the meaning of community. Each day they are in various types of communities from their school to the neighborhood in which they live. However, many children do not participate in their community and through this lack of participation they are in fact being placed at a disadvantage. Sometimes not all areas of our communities are happy, perfect places. Not all people live the same type of life. Through community service children can learn not only about the area in which they live but they can develop many necessary skills. Skills such as empathy, activism, and social awareness can be taught through community service experiences. The benefits are well worth the effort.
