Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Eastlake District Curriculum
Students in Eastlake participate in an in-depth study of English language arts. The curriculum begins in elementary school with the acquisition of basic language skills. Students learn to read and spell basic words, and as they advance from grade to grade develop an understanding of key parts of speech, such as nouns, verbs, and adjectives. In the middle grades, students develop an understanding of how to integrate ideas from various sources. This helps students become critical readers, while also promoting the growth of important research-related skills.
The Eastlake physical education curriculum includes comprehensive studies in physical education and health. To promote overall wellness, students learn about activity planning to stay on track with physical fitness. This involves engaging in various activities on a regular basis that maintain muscular strength, endurance, and circulatory and cardiovascular health. The wellness component also includes discussions of healthy relationships and sound decision making to protect one’s health.

Chalk Talk: The Value of Advanced Placement Classes
Students who are able to take Advanced Placement classes stand to reap a number of benefits. With the more rigorous curriculum, AP students acquire college-level reading, writing, and research skills before ever setting foot on a college campus. The higher ordered thinking skills required in AP coursework, such as analysis and evaluation, further prepare students for college. Since AP students can receive college credit upon satisfactory completion of the AP exam, they also get a head start on pursuing a college degree. This often results in a student being able to select a major sooner because of their early exposure to college-level work. This also means that students enter college a semester or even a year ahead of their peers. Students can then graduate from college early, or choose to use the available time in their schedule to take on a minor or a second major.
