Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Easton District Curriculum
From the first time students enter the school system through the elementary years, students are encouraged to build upon reading skills that allow them to read independently and get the most meaning and enjoyment from what they read. Students learn skills in grammar and read fiction and nonfiction in order to help them communicate more clearly and concisely. For example, students in Grade 8 can analyze details of plot, setting, and structure from a variety of short stories and novellas, in order to apply those skills to their own writing.
The Math curriculum in the Easton Area School District follows an expanding scope and sequence, from basic skills in counting and operations in the primary grades to skills and concepts in algebra and geometry in high school. In addition, teachers in Grades K-6 can ask experienced teachers who specialize in math to assist them. For example, teachers who need help teaching subtraction in Grade 2 will be able to call on math specialists for help with specific skills and strategies.

Chalk Talk: Reading at Grade Level
Report cards can be bewildering. What does it mean, for example, when a teacher or district uses a phrase like reading independently at or above grade level, and what does that mean in terms of what a child can do? It means that the student can select a book they like, read it fluently without help, and understand it well. When children are reading at grade level, they are mastering all the appropriate objectives in reading for that grade. If they are reading above grade level, they are able to achieve some of the word recognition and comprehension skills for later grades.
