Eastpointe District and Curriculum

Education in Eastpointe is administered by two school districts including East Detroit Public Schools and South Lake Schools. East Detroit Public Schools contain four elementary schools, one middle school, one alternative high school, and one traditional high school. South Lake Schools are comprised of three elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. Learning standards for the districts are based off of the national Common Core curriculum as well as the Michigan Department of Education’s Grade Level Expectations. Smaller class sizes and a personalized approach offer students a save environment for learning.

We currently cover the following Eastpointe-area school districts: East Detroit Public Schools and South Lake Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Eastpointe District Curriculum

The Common Core Language Arts curriculum is the main focus throughout both school districts. While students traditionally read a multitude of fiction in school, this new curriculum concentrates more on non-fiction texts. This allows content subjects such as Science and History to be integrated into the Language Arts lessons for a richer educational lesson. Reading stamina and fluency are another focus of this curriculum. Students must be able to read for long periods of time and do so fluently.

The Common Core Mathematics curriculum is a system that builds upon the previous year’s work. This benefits students and teachers by assuring that the students have the background knowledge necessary for the skills being introduces. Another focus of the curriculum is the ability to perform basic functions, such as adding and subtracting, with great speed. Students in the younger grades spend a lot of time practicing these operations until they are fluent enough to perform them quickly from memory.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Afterschool Clubs

We’ve all heard that joining afterschool clubs look great on college applications, but there are some other important benefits to these extracurricular activities. Students spend about 7.5 hours a day in school attending classes and completing work. These hours are generally used to cover required material and do not take into account each student’s personal interests. This is where the afterschool clubs come into play by letting students explore any and all of their interests. Some clubs focus on career topics, while others are simply to have fun. These clubs can also be an important social activity for students who may not have many friends in the classroom, but can bond with other students over mutual interests. Another benefit of afterschool activities is that it keeps students busy. Students who do not participate in any extracurricular activities are more likely to get in trouble. No matter what reason a student has for joining an afterschool club, they will benefit in many ways from these educational and social groups.
