Chalk Talk: Service Learning
Service Learning is a program offered by many schools of all grade levels to encourage students to get involved in their own community, learn important life lessons, and have fun. Service learning is any type of service a student can do for their community such as cleaning up trash, volunteering at a soup kitchen, or being a “buddy” for a younger child. These activities teach students to think more about others and how they can give of themselves. Service Learning activities are typically arranged by the school, but if a student has an idea for a service project, he should feel free to suggest it. After each service activity, participants are given class time to reflect on what they learned. Usually, students are required to write down these reflections in a report or essay. Service learning benefits the community as a whole, but more specifically allows students to apply what they have been learning in class to the world around them.
