Edgewater District and Curriculum

Volusia County Schools is a large district encompassing all of the schools located in this Florida county. Edgewater Public School is an elementary school located in Edgewater, FL. This year, the school is implementing a “Bring Your Own Technology” (BYOT) program in which students utilize donated used cell phones in order to enhance their learning. The district also partners with the community to provide students with a host of unique and engaging learning experiences that foster a love of lifelong learning. As a result of this hard work, the district is often recognized as being one of the best in the state, with high student achievement and solid graduation rates.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Edgewater District Curriculum

Volusia County Schools’ superintendent regularly posts updates to the elementary curriculum. Prior to the 2014-15 school year, elementary math and language arts teachers collaborated with other teachers during K-2 Inspire. The educators worked together to incorporate curriculum guides, design high-quality lesson plans for the first quarter of the year, create instructional materials that would enhance student learning, and understand the importance of effective lesson planning.

Additionally, the K-5 Curriculum At-A-Glance documents provide an overview of the concepts and content taught and learned in social studies horizontally across grade levels and vertically from grade to grade; these documents are also supports for teachers and demonstrate common instruction and learning across grade levels to educators and administrators. Lastly, teachers were trained to create the structure and routine needed to integrate centers and small-group learning in math. The district provides curriculum maps and guides; the English language arts guides include cyclical reading and writing standards, the pacing for each quarter, essential questions, and the available resources.

Chalk Talk: Apps to Teach Writing

The Common Core Standards call for a great deal of writing, and there are several iPad apps that teachers can sue when teaching writing to students. Popplet is known for being a mindmapping tool. It is a great for the writing process, as it helps with prewriting and students organizing their ideas. StoryBuilder is an app designed for elementary students and helps them understand story structure, including sentence structure, sequencing, and inferencing; SentenceBuilder is a related app that helps students put together sentences. With StoryBuilder, students build their comprehension skills by answering questions about pictures, and their answers are recorded and put together to form a cohesive story. ToonTastic appeared on the New York Times list of “Best Apps of the Year.” Elementary-aged children follow the steps to incorporate the elements of a story: setup, conflict, challenge, climax, and resolution. Students simply press ‘record’ and manipulate the characters to tell their story; they can play their stories back for their friends and family.
