Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Edison District Curriculum

Students on the elementary level receive a balanced literacy approach to learning literacy. Learners benefit from differentiated instruction and a variety of educational experiences such as reading silently and aloud, interactive reading, and reading and writing workshops. All students are assessed on an ongoing basis to ensure they are developing literacy skills. Middle and high school students study ELA through a mix of literary works such as plays, poetry, fiction and non-fiction. Students are encouraged to express themselves in relation to what they read, and to learn to express personal opinion and to relay facts.

The Social Studies curriculum throughout the grades is designed to help students become informed about their surroundings and the world. This is to help create citizens who are able to contribute to society and make good decisions. The use of technology broadens the students’ learning horizons. Literacy is encouraged in tandem with Social Studies to ensure better integration and understanding of the material.

Chalk Talk: Ways to Prepare for the SAT

If your high school student is planning to go to college, they should probably consider taking a college entrance exam such as the SAT. Although it is an important test, preparing for the SAT can go smoothly with some preparation. It is helpful if the student becomes familiar with the format of the test. This will help to ease anxiety and lets the student know what is expected of him or her. There are several good study guides which can be purchased and students can also consider taking the PSAT, which follows a similar format of the SAT and can be a good predictor of SAT scores.
