Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Edmonds District Curriculum
The goals of the Science Department in the district are to create scientifically literate members of the 21st century and life-long learners. In order to accomplish this goal, they have developed a curriculum that follows the Washington State Science Standards while implementing critical thinking and data analysis skills into the curriculum. The district has a curriculum laid out for all students starting with ninth grade Physical Science, followed by tenth grade Biology and then the student’s choice of AP Biology, Chemistry or Physics.
The Mathematics curriculum in the district allows students choices in pathways to complete the math requirements for graduation. Students all take Algebra 1, but then can choose to take Geometry or Honors Geometry, Algebra 2 or Honors Algebra 2, and then they can choose upper division math classes including college transition math, Calculus, AP Calculus, or AP statistics.

Edmonds District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
The goal of Edmonds School District is to make productive citizens of the 21st century. In order to achieve this goal, the district has created a curriculum that focuses on allowing students to communicate, collaborate, critically think, take initiative, and solve problems in all content areas. Students also prepare to take the High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE) in the tenth grade. In eleventh grade, more focus is placed on structured writing, literary analysis, discussions, and presentations. The Writing for College text is used in this course. In twelfth grade students begin to prepare for college and life after high school. The focus in twelfth grade English classes is college level writing and text analysis.

Keeping Informed: Recent Edmonds Educational News
- Equity Alliance for Achievement (EAACH) - The Edmonds School District has created the Equity Alliance for Achievement alliance to create a partnership between parents and schools. Parents sit on the advisory to let the district and school administrations know what needs to be done to improve their student’s success in school. This program lets the parents feel more connected to school, which in itself increases student achievement.
- Music Programs - In a time of tight standards, high stakes testing, and budget cuts Edmonds School District still believes that music and art education helps kids achieve. The district offers summer music and art program open to all students in grades K-12. This program is free of charge to all participants.
- Diversity and Indian Education - In order to make school accessible for all students and to ensure all students are successful in school, Edmonds School District created this program. Educators and administrators from the district support parent advocacy, host cultural events, provide academic support and include students in career exploration. More important than the activities and support provided, however, is the inclusion all students feel in their schools, which contributes to their success.

My daughter was able to improve her test scores after a few months of tutoring with SchoolTutoring. However, while raising test scores is great, the real payoff is in the self-confidence that she gained.
I just wanted to send a quick note to say thank-you! My son is very impressed with his tutor and looks forward to each session. What’s particularly amazing about this is our son has never really looked forward to math or school for that matter!
We are so happy with the results of your tutoring program and academic support. Homework time was such a stressful evening for the entire evening before we brought your tutors into our home. Thank you for all your help!
Our daughter, a first grader, struggled with basic reading and handwriting. When she began with SchoolTutoring she was almost a year behind her class. Within a year of being enrolled, she is reading above her grade level and has the confidence to match.

Chalk Talk: Time Management
Time management is basically learning how to decide between two or more activities. To help a child learn how to do this, help them make a list of important and urgent tasks. Important tasks are important to them but if it is urgent it needs to be done immediately. Then parents need to help the child make a list of general topics of activities, such as friends, health and fitness, family, community, and so on. Then under each category place activities to be prioritized. Allow the child to practice this every once in a while, either using a list like above or with actual activities for them to choose from. For example, they may need to choose between studying for a test and watching television. Finally, each day, have them make a list of items that need to be done before bedtime that night and help them make the best choices for their time available.
