Chalk Talk: Education and the Information Processing Theory
George A. Miller’s informational processing theory is an important theory in educational psychology for educators, administrators, and curriculum developers to keep in mind. The informational processing theory states that students can only store so many pieces of information—typically five to nine pieces—in their short-term memory at one time. An example that illustrates this concept is that many people are able to easily memorize and recall standard seven-digit phone numbers, as their short-term memory can store these seven bits of information. This is vital, as students are often asked to memorize an overabundance of information (more than their short-term memories can hold), and then teachers wonder why students cannot recall the information.
