Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Egg Harbor District Curriculum

Students in the Egg Harbor Township School District must demonstrate their learning by meeting benchmarks and standards outlined in the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. These standards establish what students should learn and be able to understand at each grade from pre-K through the 12th grade. Students must demonstrate proficiency in seven core areas: world languages, social studies, science, visual and performing arts, health and physical education, technology and 21st Century life.

The Social Studies curriculum is aimed at helping students acquire the knowledge and skills they need in order to be informed citizens and active members of society. Beginning in elementary school, students acquire an understanding of how past events influence the present. Students learn about how laws are created and how those laws, regardless of how old, still protect citizens today. In middle school, students begin to analyze what “fairness” and “equity” mean, both in past and present terms.

Chalk Talk: Why Inclusivity Is Important

In an effort to improve school environments, many student and teacher-led organizations are taking a proactive approach to promote inclusivity and break down barriers between social groups. Many schools have started leadership or mentor programs in an effort to teach kids about accepting one another. These programs often utilize peer mentors who undergo hours and hours of training in order to learn how to facilitate learning experiences for their peers. These mentors provide educational, emotional and social support to one another as well as to younger students. The impact these programs have on participating schools cannot be understated. Schools that have leadership or mentorship programs have far fewer problems with bullying, insubordination and even tardiness. At the same time, these programs bring students closer together and help to create a true feeling of community within the school.
