Chalk Talk: Talking With Children About the News

Children are surrounded by the news, often repeatedly. They hear about news items over the radio, on television, on the internet or from the newspaper. They can often times feel overwhelmed with the scenes they see or the words they hear or read. To help them understand, parents should limit the amount of material the children are presented with, especially young children. The young may not realize that the news program is repeating the same event and the repeated viewing can escalate their fear. After the viewing or hearing about a topic, the parent should take a few minutes to talk about what was seen, but do not over-explain. The use of simple words and limited time can help ease some of the fear. After this, parents need to realize that the fear the child feels is real and needs to be recognized, oftentimes a hug and a smile can help a child feel better.
