Elmira District and Curriculum

The Elmira City School District is located in Elmira, New York and includes schools in Elmira and the surrounding towns of Ashland, Baldwin, Erin, Pine City, Southport, and Wellsburg. The district includes eight elementary schools, two middle schools and three high schools. ECSD uses the Common Core Learning Standards for Math and Language Arts in all of its schools. These curriculum standards have been approved by the New York State Board of Regents in an effort to standardize curriculum across the state.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Elmira District Curriculum

At the elementary level, in English and Language Arts, the focus is on developing reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills that allow students to have command of the English language. The ability to critically analyze reading material is also stressed so that students ask and answer complex questions about their reading. Students are expected to be able to provide detailed analyses of the material and to write compositions and reports that are well documented.

In Math, students in elementary school learn the basics of counting and numbers, basic arithmetic and mathematical operations. They also are presented with simple algebraic and geometric thinking. Students continue with their studies in algebra and geometry and also learn the basics of probability and statistics. Coursework in Math stresses the ability to use abstract reasoning, to solve complex math problems using the correct mathematical tools and logic.

Keeping Informed: Recent Elmira Educational News

  • Financial Aid Info - Southside High School held a Financial Aid Night for all High School Juniors and Seniors and their parents in order to provide information about financial aid, scholarships and other financial resources which can be used for college tuition. School counselors were present to answer questions and there was a presentation by Rick Ross of the College Financing Group on different type of school loans.
  • Recycling Day Program - Southside High School (SHS) held an Electronics Recycling Day with proceeds going to benefit Project Graduation 2013. The event ran from throughout the day and electronic waste items that were accepted for recycling included keyboards, mice, printers, copiers, VCRs, DVD players, cell phones, toasters, and TVs. Cash donations were also welcomed.
  • Class Efforts - Members of the Amy Cicora’s Special Education class at Pine City Elementary School were able to contribute to a family that had lost a home to a recent fire by trying hard in school and by showing good behavior. When the students did well, they were able to earn money which was donated by a BOCES social worker to give to a Student Aide, who had recently lost her home. The experience taught the students how to count, and contributed to self esteem as they were able to make a difference in someone else’s life.
