Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Elmwood Park District Curriculum

Benchmarks for student learning in math and language arts classes are established by the Common Core States Standards. These standards have been adopted by all New Jersey public school districts, as well as districts in states across the nation. The New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards provide similar guidance, and govern what students should learn and know in all other core subject areas.

The health and physical education strand of the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards is a multi-faceted curriculum that teaches students the knowledge and skills they need to lead a healthy, active life. A primary component of the curriculum is the development of effective interpersonal communication skills. Students are taught to how to express their needs, wants and feelings in safety-related situations, such as how to say no when offered drugs or alcohol. To improve interpersonal relationships, students are taught basic conflict-resolution techniques, as well as negotiation, refusal and assertiveness skills.

Chalk Talk: How to Improve Academic Success

If your child is struggling to maintain their grades or consistently performs poorly on exams, there are many simple strategies you can use to help them get back on track. When students’ grades fall, it might seem to them like an insurmountable mountain to climb. But helping them establish small goals can turn that mountain into easily attainable molehills. Goals might be established to hand all homework in on time for one week or to simply go in after school for help from their teacher. Accomplishing these smaller goals will give your child the confidence and momentum they need to keep going. Another strategy to employ is to help your child manage their time more productively. Setting aside a specific time for homework or studying will help your child establish a nightly routine that will increase their productivity. During their study time, ensure that there are minimal distractions – from you and from their friends – so they can maintain focus on their studies and retain more information. Doing so will help them improve their performance on exams and improve their overall academic achievement.
