The Elmwood Park Public Schools is a comprehensive K-12 district that operates three elementary schools, one middle school and one high school, which serve over 2,300 students. The health and physical education strand of the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards is a multi-faceted curriculum that teaches students the knowledge and skills they need to lead a healthy, active life. A primary component of the curriculum is the development of effective interpersonal communication skills. Students are taught to how to express their needs, wants and feelings in safety-related situations, such as how to say no when offered drugs or alcohol. To improve interpersonal relationships, students are taught basic conflict-resolution techniques, as well as negotiation, refusal and assertiveness skills.
