Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Erie District Curriculum
The Science curriculum bases student knowledge in the areas of earth science, physical science, and biological science during the early years. The content and conceptual knowledge that students develop in these areas are also underpinned by their learning about how to observe phenomenon, formulate hypotheses, test and verify results of their hypotheses and report their scientific observations.
The Language Arts curriculum emphasizes the literacy and communication skills that students use in all their courses. Students also develop a wealth of research skills in their Language Arts classes that help them be able to determine whether information is credible and gives them the ability to analyze and evaluate material. Students are expected to make presentations on what they have read and incorporate multimedia resources into their presentation skills. They are also expected to develop listening skills during in-class discussions and other presentations.

Chalk Talk: The Popularity of STEM Programs
Programs in STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and math) have become very popular over the last decade and are often a cornerstone of districts initiatives in preparing students with 21st century learning opportunities. There has been some backlash from critics who suggest that there is no great increase in students entering science or math related fields, however the learning opportunities continue to grow and support the goals of the curriculum in providing programs that connect to shifts in the general career landscape. Although many students will not be going into science or math related fields, the learning about technology and engineering becomes an invaluable asset in how they are able to adapt to change and embrace technological advances in their own career. The courses offer students many innovative and challenging learning experiences and students enjoy relevancy in their classroom learning.
