Erin District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

In Erin, the schools use the Ontario Curriculum as the framework for instruction and assessment. The curriculum lays out grade level expectations that students are to meet in each subject and then use these expectations as the basis for the questions on the formal, province-wide assessments in math and literacy. Each subject is taught to build foundational knowledge and compound that with more in-depth learning. Students are expected to be able to apply their knowledge, demonstrate abilities, and create works of original scholarship as a measure of achievement in each subject.

We currently cover the following Erin-area school districts: Wellington Catholic School Board Ontario North East and Upper Grand District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Erin District Curriculum

The course of study in the Language curriculum helps students develop reading comprehension strategies that build their analytic skills in all types of texts. Students also use media as text and learn how to understand the purpose and message of each piece of media they view. In their writings, students learn how to remain objective in their tone when the situation calls for non-opinion pieces. Students also work on the craft and structure of their writings. Learners devise methods to write impactful introductory paragraphs, with body paragraphs that support their ideas and a conclusion that sums up their main points.

The core subjects have been enhanced with innovative programs like the High Skills Specialist Majors, Language Immersion and Environmental Education. Each of these allow students to pursue areas of student that will prepare them for post-secondary work. The elective offerings are also designed to engage student curiosity and interest.

Chalk Talk: Developing Critical Thinking Skills

Critical thinking has an important place in the curriculum as it is expected to occur within all subjects. In English, students learn to analyze and interpret works of literature and media; at home, parents can talk to their children about the stories they read and movies they watch to promote this type of thought. In Math, abstract reasoning is developed by using what students know about math to extrapolate new mathematic information. Similarly, a type of "if/then" discussions can help draw out this type of thinking. When a matter comes up that requires some problem-solving, asking a child for solutions can always yield some interesting thinking.
