Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Escalon District Curriculum

In Math, students learn how to make sense of math problems and choose appropriate methods and tools to solve them. Students learn skills to reason quantitatively, make and use mathematic models, and to construct arguments and proofs. Some of the classes students take calls upon them to look for patterns and more complex structures, which helps develop the thinking skill of abstract reasoning.

When students are in the later years of middle school and during high school, they will have a number of programs offered which are focused on technology, media, communication, the sciences, and countless other opportunities. These are programs designed to bring together subject areas or to accelerate learning in one topic. These programs will follow a curriculum central to its goals, though students will receive the core curriculum subjects required for graduation.

Escalon District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The schools of Escalon use an objective-driven curriculum which specifies the learning standards within each subject from the most basic skills to the advanced knowledge student will have by their senior year of high school. The objectives which are laid out a guide the process of instruction and student proficiency within each subject is required for the next year.

In Language Arts, the goal is to prepare students with the literacy and communication skills they will need to pursue college-level study and for the purposes of their career. Teachers will model strategies for finding meaning in literary texts and analyzing information in non-fiction. Students must write for a range of purposes, will conduct research, and are required to develop a process for writing that includes revising and editing. Additionally, language-based skills in vocabulary and grammar are among the topics students are expected to know.
