Espanola District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

For students of Espanola, learning is guided by the Ontario Curriculum which is a broad framework for all subjects and elective programs offered to students at all grade levels. The core academic subjects were designed so that students build foundational skills and develop higher-order thinking skills from them. The enrichment courses offered integrate core academics, expand on student knowledge, and connect students to subjects of interest. Students acquire much needed academic knowledge and skills, and also acquire personal, social, and emotional skills that facilitate their personal growth and development. The result is graduates that are college and career ready, and who are prepared to become citizens that contribute positively to the community in which they live.

We currently cover the following Espanola-area school districts: Huron-Superior Catholic District Board and Rainbow District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Espanola District Curriculum

In English, students develop the literacy and communication skills to be analytic and critical thinkers, readers, media viewers, and listeners. Through the study of world languages, students gain fluent speaking abilities and also demonstrate proficiency in reading and writing in their language of study.

The curriculum in Math is set up so that during elementary school students learn numerical operations, basic geometry and measurement, and literacy skills in quantitative data through charts, graphs, and other visuals. In the long term, students acquire spatial and abstract reasoning, and are able to use proportions and statistical analysis to estimate real-world probabilities.

In Science, the elementary framework teaches facts and skills of science, placing great emphasis on the process of investigation that scientists use to explore theories. The topics in biology, physical science, and earth and environmental science help student to understand natural principles and use scientific thought to develop explanations.

Chalk Talk: Technology Offers Students Many Benefits

It is well documented that technology in the classroom is beneficial for students. Incorporating the Internet, educational websites, and educational apps, among other things, helps students become active participants in the learning process. Rather than sitting idly through a teacher’s lecture, students can instead explore topics on their own, watch informational videos and online presentations, and examine videos and photographs of the topic under study. The use of technology in the classroom also makes sense from the perspective that students today have grown up with the Internet, tablets, computers, and mobile phones. By utilizing these tools for educational purposes, teachers are essentially speaking their students’ language. And since we live in a highly technological world, students that harness technology for learning purposes gain valuable educational and on-the-job skills that will prepare them for college and career.
