Essex, Vermont provides education services by means of two school districts: Essex Junction School District, which is a part of the Chittenden Central Supervisory Union, and Town of Essex School District. The districts use a standards-based curriculum which details the learning progress across the grade span. Also, central to the vision of both school districts is the use of technology to advance students grasp of foundational skills for use in occupations or higher education.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Essex District Curriculum

Essex Town School District uses a student-centered approach to learning with a model that spans four years. This method teaches students to be responsible for their own progress in the learning process and they are engaged in every part of the process, from pinpointing problems to finding innovative solutions through research, exploration, and innovation. Teachers act as facilitators to make the entire process a success in preparing students for the next grade level and beyond the school walls.

Essex Junction School District (CCSU) is also focused on the student learner. The curricula is written to correspond to Vermont Framework Standards and Learning Opportunities, though they are under revision currently to begin the 2013 school year with Common Core State Standards which will help all school districts across the nation to embrace one unified curriculum that will help students attain the standard skills required for employment or higher education.

Keeping Informed: Recent Essex Educational News

  • EHS Represents Vermont Educational Innovation - Essex High School was among three Vermont schools to be chosen as representatives for the Regional Conference on High School Innovation which took place in March of 2013. The school was chosen, among other reasons, because of its commitment to improving its current curricula to make it more aligned with nationwide standards and more useful for Vermont’s students.
  • Saving Trees - Rather than continue to pile on the paperwork, Essex High School students were able to register for sports online starting in February 2013. The first step of the registration handles the basics, and then this information is used to populate other necessary documents like consent forms. The only thing that students have to answer are sports-specific requested information… after that it is just save, print, sign, and turn it in!
  • Energy Challenge - The Essex Educational Center has accepted the challenge, along with 9 other Vermont schools, to cut energy usage by at least 10 percent. Each classroom can participate in the effort by shutting down computers at the end of the day, shutting the blinds in the evening, and making sure the lights are off when rooms are not in use. These simple measures can save the school district thousands of dollars per school year… funds that can be better used to continue provide the quality education that the students deserve.

Chalk Talk: How to Choose Classes

Some classes are unavoidable.. the requisite math, science, literature, and even physical education. However, if you have flexibility in your schedule to choose an elective, why not choose a class that will benefit you later in life? Many students choose to take a foreign language if they would like to have a lifestyle or career that includes international business, travel, health care, or cuisine. Think about your future career path and ask yourself which skills will be required. Consider how certain electives can give you an advantage on college applications or job interviews. Don’t leave your class schedule to chance, choose wisely now and you will benefit from your good decisions for years to come.
