Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Eufaula District Curriculum

Eufaula City Schools is a newly established district educationally that is the home of many enrichment and methodological prospects for students and teachers. The teachers are highly qualified, and use data to drive their instruction. This shows in the students' testing scores, as all schools in this district are fully accredited.

In reading and writing, the teachers begin in the primary levels with enriching the children and surrounding them in print from a variety of formats, such as books, technology tools, manipulatives, word cards, games, and much more. This helps build a solid foundation in phonemic awareness for the students, and having this knowledge helps them become much better, more fluent readers. In writing, the students begin with pictures and inventive spelling, and as they move up in grades, they learn about the complete writing process and eventually become very advanced in their writing and communication abilities.

Keeping Informed: Recent Eufaula Educational News

  • Skyping with Teachers - Parents of students can now Skype their teachers for scheduled conferences. Sometimes it is hard for parents to miss work to come into the school to meet, so the school system now encourages teachers to have the free Skype program at home. Voice calls over the internet can be made at no cost and with the face to face interaction, it is a great way to keep in touch and discuss the children's academic progress.
  • Common Core Video - Now parents and teachers can get on YouTube watch an insightful video on the Alabama Core Standards entitled "A New Foundation for Student Success." It discusses the impact on education and the children's future and what needs to be done to prepare the students' for next generation learning opportunities.
  • Learning Nanoscience - A sixth grade class learned the basics of Nanoscience at Admiral Moorer Middle School. A professor at the University of Alabama demonstrated to the students how to create sparks and how to create glowing iron dust. The students were learning about the joys of science, and that doing hands-on activities with their peers is the best part about the subject. It is always nice to have the students be rejuvenated through learning, and this day did just that.

Chalk Talk: Teacher Communication

Parents can communicate with teachers in many ways. They can call the school and schedule a conference, and many teachers are very accommodating to meet in the before or after school hours. Parents can also request to call the teacher on the phone and have a phone conference if they find it hard to travel to the school to meet. Some school systems offer video conferencing, such as Skype as an even better way to communicate face-to-face with a teacher, but from home. Most teachers are very apt to meetings with parents, and many are very flexible with dates and times. Communication does not have to happen if your child is struggling; teachers love to have conferences about the students that excel in their class!
