Euless District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District reaches students where they are educationally by combining their educators’ knowledge with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. The curriculum is designed so that it is not prescriptive about how teachers should turn the learning objectives into engaging classroom experiences that access different student’s learning styles effectively. For students who require additional assistance or enrichment opportunities, the district provides these necessary extensions for core academics.

We currently cover the following Euless-area school district: Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Euless District Curriculum

The students at Euless School explore the world around them to discover science. In elementary they learn about their teeth by hosting a dentist and asking questions. They then use the outdoors to study rocks, soil and water. As they enter middle school they learn how to construct a science notebook. This allows them to replace misconceptions with correct information that they can refer to when topics come into question. They can use concepts taught by keeping this notebook the rest of their lives as they learn to use references to confirm or to deny theories they may develop.

The reading curriculum begins by children learning about books by listening to stories by their teachers. They then learn strategies to help them break down words into sounds, and then to use smaller words to decode larger words. Each of these strategies, as well as others, assists students as they study other subjects and as they begin to read entire books. They can then use books like “Hatchet” to complete a novel study. By the time these students graduate they will have uncovered many methods to read more.

Chalk Talk: Fifth Grade Science

By the time most students enter fifth grade, they are ready to learn how to complete the scientific method. They are now measuring, counting, predicting and recording data. Along with this student will have homework in science, which parent may need to help complete. The child is expected to remember some of the basics they learn, as they now need to make predictions. Each state may have their own desired outcomes in fifth grade, but generally students will be learning: how to create a hypothesis, defend conclusions, complete experiments with density and boiling/freezing point, and understand some details about the solar system. Even if a child is not expecting to enter the world of science, these basics will help them to understand that science is found all around them.
