The Common Core curriculum provides a set of unified expectations for students in the areas of Mathematics and English and Language Arts (ELA). In ELA, students focus on the learning the English language through reading, writing, speaking and listening. Reading material in ELA includes both informational text and literature in preparation of the types of reading one might find on the job or in college. Students are expected to develop skills in conducting research, reading for evidence and critical analysis. The complexity of reading and writing assignments increases year by year with students building on their skill level in each grade.

In Mathematics, students focus in on core math topics which they study in intensive detail. These core subjects include arithmetic, algebra, statistics, geometry, measurement and proportional reasoning. The goal is for students to be math literate by graduation and able to apply what they have learned to math problems in the workforce and in higher education.
