Evansville District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Just over 1,700 students in kindergarten through the twelfth grade attend school in the Evansville Community School District. The district has developed a wide range of academic and extracurricular programming in order to meet the needs of each and every child. These student-based programs, combined with small class sizes and school personnel that are both highly dedicated and highly qualified, mean that students have all the resources they need in order to reach their potential. Evansville School District also works closely with the community and families to design learning experiences that promote the development of strong social and emotional skills.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Evansville District Curriculum

A central component of the world languages curriculum is an examination of the cultural traditions of countries that speak the language under study. Students learn about social mores and customs, and become aware of culturally specific guidelines when communicating with native speakers. Using their new language, students acquire the ability to read fluently, including developing an understanding of unfamiliar words and phrases by using the context in which they appear. Students also work on improving their writing skills by developing various forms of written works.

Evansville’s middle school math curriculum is built upon the Common Core State Standards. Learners are introduced to ratios and proportional relationships and utilize that understanding to solve mathematical problems. Students explore the number system in depth as well. Multiplication and division of fractions is undertaken, as is fluent computation of multi-digit numbers. Geometric concepts, including volume, area, and surface area, are also explored. Independent and dependent variables are another central topic of study, as are the concepts of variability, reliability, and validity.

Chalk Talk: Why Parental Involvement Is Important

School personnel work hard to ensure that their students have the resources they need in order to reach their potential. But learning does not just take place during the day or in a vacuum. Rather, learning requires the input and support of many stakeholders, but most especially parents. Research shows that parental involvement in education is one of the strongest predictors of student success. Children whose parents are involved in their education outperform their peers in a variety of measures, including on standardized tests in math and reading. This is due in large part to parental oversight of educational activities at home. With more involved parents, students are more likely to complete their homework on time, have a better attitude about education, and have improved attendance. This, in turn, helps students achieve their academic potential in school.
