Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Evesham Township District Curriculum

The New Jersey Common Core Standards emphasize the major academic subjects, placing particular emphasis on Language Arts and Math because of the way in which these subjects support learning in all areas. The Language Arts curriculum ties together reading, writing, communication skills, and research skills. Students are taught to read both fiction and non-fiction to develop different types of interpretative and evaluative reading strategies.

The Math curriculum follows along a series of objectives that help students develop their numeracy skills and then begin building an understanding of algebra, probability, and geometry. Elementary students are taught to recognize patterns, understand the different functions of shapes, learn about fractions and decimals and how to compare and contrast quantities. These basic skills provide the necessary tools for more complex quantitative and abstract reasoning they will do in high school mathematics.

Chalk Talk: How to Get Your Children Ready for Kindergarten

While you are preparing lunch or dinner, most parents want their small children near enough to know what they’re up to, while having them away from the stove or oven. Using magnet letters and numbers on the refrigerator can help keep your child busy and learning under your supervision, so that you are interacting together and getting things done. Also, you can provide them with a couple of short age-appropriate books and have your child tell you the story from pictures, memories and other cues, so that your child becomes familiar with the reading process. Also encourage your child to predict what will happen in the story next, to help him or her improve critical thinking skills. The tools to do these things are less than $10 total, easily accessible for your child, and they create an environment that is full of learning opportunities.
