Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Fabens District Curriculum
The English curriculum at Fabens Independent School District helps students learn how to make proper presentations, both written and oral. Students begin by learning the skills needed to share topics that are important to them. They also learn how to summarize material in written and oral forms. Students continue on to discover how to carry out research on a topic and then to translate it into a form that would interest an audience. Each of these will be helpful as students continue on with their lives after graduation.
The social studies curriculum explores various cultures around the world. This begins by studying the local history, including why and when people settled here. This continues as the study their state and the country. Students discover the importance trade and exploration made on settling an area. They also find that around the world there are similar reasons for people to create homes and communities in specific areas. Chalk Talk: Effect of Culture on Education
Culture has an impact on how children learn and understand the world. There are some cultures which believe that working with other students is cheating while others see it as a way to give or receive assistance. There are places where it is believed that children should be quiet during the school day and eye contact should be avoided. One more is that all material should be considered communal while others believe that items belong to the individual. The differences in cultural history and ideologies need to be considered in the classroom and if children get together to study at home so they can obtain knowledge in a way that is suitable to them.
