Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Fair Lawn District Curriculum

Fair Lawn Public Schools has devised a rigorous curriculum in order to best prepare students for future success. Using the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards as a guideline, the district has devised benchmarks for student learning in the following core subject areas: math, science, social studies, language arts, technology, health and physical education, 21st Century life and careers, visual and performing arts and world languages.

The world languages curriculum focuses on providing students with authentic and culturally-relevant content such that students learn both the language and culturally significant information. Fair Lawn Public Schools offers courses in French, Spanish and Chinese for grades 3-12. In elementary school, the focus is on helping students acquire basic foreign language skills. Students learn words, basic phrases and cultural practices. In middle school, the focus turns to exploring the cultural characteristics of countries where the language is spoken and enhancing their linguistic skills and cultural understanding.

Chalk Talk: Success on the SAT

Taking the SAT is a huge undertaking and one that can cause a lot of stress and anxiety. A lot rides on SAT scores, so performing at their highest level is important for students. There are a number of strategies students can use to be more successful on the SAT. First, take practice tests and take them over and over. The more students engage in the material and the manner in which it’s constructed, the more comfortable they will be on test day. There are hundreds of books, guides and online resources that can help students prepare. Second, students need to ensure that they get a good night’s sleep the night before the test. This may be difficult with nerves running high, but students who are sleep-deprived will not perform at their best. Ensuring they have a good breakfast the morning of the test will also help keep their brains on top of the game.
