Concepts related to geometry and measurements are an essential feature of Fairmont’s middle school math curriculum. Students solve problems related to right triangles by employing the Pythagorean theorem. Learners use the theorem to find the distance between two points on a vertical or horizontal line as well. Using measurements and diagrams, students also justify the Pythagorean theorem. The relationship between the slopes of parallel lines is explored, as is the relationship between the slope of perpendicular lines. An analysis of polygons is undertaken as well.

The elementary arts curriculum in Fairmont introduces students to the foundational concepts of various artistic endeavors. Theatre students learn about a variety of theatrical styles, including those with Western and non-Western influences. Basic features of the visual arts are explored as well. Students learn about color, line, shape, and texture, and how those elements can be combined to produce visual pieces. Learners are also exposed to dance. Chalk Talk: Some Colleges No Longer Require ACT/SAT

While the vast majority of colleges and universities in the United States require students to achieve a minimum score on the SAT, ACT, or both to gain admittance, some institutions are beginning to shy away from that practice. Some research indicates that the ACT and SAT are not wholly reflective of a student’s academic ability, that the tests are too focused on a student’s test-taking skills. As a result, some institutions feel that qualified students are being excluded from admission based on their test scores. Other research indicates that standardized tests like the SAT and ACT favor more affluent school districts whose students have the resources to prepare. Others contend that high-stakes testing puts undue pressure on students to succeed. As a result, some colleges and universities are placing higher emphasis on a student’s classroom performance as opposed to their test scores.
