Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Falls Church District Curriculum

The Science Curriculum is taught from a theme-based approach in the early years. Some of the themes used include weather, and seasonal ideas. As they continue the student begin to use some of these ideas to make multi-media presentations of some of the topics. They have created projects based on tornadoes, blizzards and hurricanes. The teachers continue to bring relevance into the learning experience as the classes see examples of life-cycles as they adopt manatees.

The Social Studies curriculum begins with children learning about their communities include how and why the area has grown and changed. They also learn how citizens can use their words and actions to make contributions to their area. These same students are given the opportunity to view economics from a unique perspective when they create a classroom community with each student having a job for which they are paid. This money is used to begin an in-class business and then they participate in a “Market Day” where they learn by doing.

Chalk Talk: How to Help a Teen Develop a Positive Virtual Personality

There is a lot said about how all teenagers have a pessimistic or negative outlook on the world. This is especially the issue in the virtual world. With a little assistance this can be changed around. Young people need to be aware that the way they appear on the social networks is representative of them. The words that they post today will stay around for the rest of their lives. These viewpoints and words are available to colleges that they may wish to attend and by future employers. Before they post anything, young people should ask themselves a few questions. How would they feel if their parents were to read this? How would I feel if the college I want to go to would read this? Would I want my future employer to read this? With these questions in mind, the teens will have a better hold on their future while posting today.
