Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Farmington District Curriculum
Farmington’s elementary level science curriculum focuses on helping students develop the foundational skills they need to conduct scientific inquiry. Children learn how to objectively describe events and phenomena. Students organize plants, animals, and objects into various groups according to their type, form, function, and the like. Learners also study the weather. As part of their investigations, students monitor daily changes in the weather, noting temperature, wind direction and speed, and barometric pressure. Students also examine the sun, and explain its role in promoting and sustaining life on earth.
The middle school English language arts curriculum includes a comprehensive study of reading literature. Students learn how to appropriately cite textual evidence when analyzing their interpretation of the text. Learners work on correctly identifying the central idea of a text and how the author utilizes supporting details to support that main idea. Plot elements are explored as well, with students also identifying the ways in which characters develop throughout the course of a story. Students also expand their vocabulary. Using the context of the story they are reading, leaners develop the ability to decipher the meaning of new words.
