Farmington District and Curriculum

Residents of the Town of Farmington will attend one of the following school districts: Manchester-Shortsville Central School District (MSCSD), Victor Central School District (VCSD), and Canandaigua Central School District (CCSD). The three school districts that serve Farmington residents adhere to the New York State Education Department (NYSED) guidelines and the recently adopted Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The NYSED has integrated the CCSS into its own system, creating the Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS) as benchmarks for individual districts.

We currently cover the following Farmington-area school districts: Canandaigua Central School District, Manchester-Shortsville Central School District, and Victor Central School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Farmington District Curriculum

Early Childhood and primary school curricula focus primarily on foundational skills, particularly in literacy in all subjects. Students must learn preparatory work in English language arts, science, social studies, mathematics, as well as general music, art, and physical education. Students at the younger levels also receive character education instruction, which will help them with critical thinking, decision-making, and goal setting.

The secondary curricula at Red Jacket High School, Victor Senior High School, and Canandaigua Academy prepare students to enter collegiate training or careers, right out of high school. Students receive rigorous core academic training, while having access to a variety of exploratory options. Most electives subjects include the arts, business, foreign languages, music, technology education, physical education, health, and other college prepatory courses. Students have access to vocational training and Advanced Placement courses. All graduation guidelines meet the NYSED requirements.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Close Reading Practice

Close reading is an academic activity to create focused attention and awareness of text, conventions, and language. Students will read, and re-read, certain passages to answer essential questions, understand language and grammar, and learn about various literary lenses (i.e. feminism, formalism, Marxism, etc.). Students will gain new insights into the author’s intentions and others’ interpretations through close reading. The reason why close reading is so important is it helps students to collaborate, discuss, debate, and formulate arguments. Students must defend their interpretations, but they must also clearly see their classmates’ perspectives. Close reading gives students a chance to connect texts to their own experiences, through answering essential questions about relationships, self-exploration, and other vital aspects of development. These assignments help students to think more critically about why and how events occur. Students will also learn how to identify subtle nuances in texts, so they can understand better cultural knowledge. With close reading assignments, students will gain skills to become independent in their thinking and critical in their decision-making.
