Chalk Talk: Writing an Effective College Essay

Each year, thousands of high school students write their college admissions essay. Yet many students don’t seize the opportunity and end up writing an essay that gets lost in the pile. To help your child write an impactful essay that will impress admissions officers, follow these steps. First encourage your child to be concise. With so many essays to read, admissions officers will not want to read a long-winded essay. Sticking to the point and demonstrating the ability to be concise will be much appreciated. Second, remind your child that the essay needs to be well written. This goes beyond using spell check. Students need to ensure they have used proper grammar, sentence structure, and attended to other aspects of mechanics as well. Lastly, your child’s essay needs to be vivid, exciting, or use humor. Many students fall into the trap of writing an essay that is completely serious. While that’s okay, a light-hearted or funny essay will stand out from the crowd.
