Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Fishers District Curriculum

Hamilton Southeastern School District follows a curriculum with standards set forth by the Common Core State Standards of Indiana. The English Language Arts program focuses on the acquisition of the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking with the goals of producing critical readers and effective communicators.

The mathematics curriculum of HSE focuses on basic math concepts such as adding, subtracting, multiplication, division and fractions as well as geometry and algebraic thinking on the elementary level. Students continue to build on previous knowledge as they explore the number system, geometry and algebraic thinking on the middle and high school levels. In addition to its ENL program, it also offers services and supports for Exceptional Learners, Advanced Placement and college credit and a comprehensive High Ability Program.

Chalk Talk: Answer Keys With Math Homework

When assigning math homework, it can be extremely useful if an answer key is provided to the students as well, either with the worksheet or online. This can be helpful as a support for both the student and the parent as well. The student can self-check every few problems to ensure he or she is understanding the process in obtaining the correct answer. When the student requires parental assistance, an answer key ensures that the parent is providing meaningful support, particularly if they are unsure or unfamiliar with the type of math that was assigned. Homework is intended to be a reinforcement of what is learned in class. Therefore, providing an answer key with math homework could be helpful in ensuring students are arriving at the correct answers when trying the skill at home.
