Chalk Talk: What Is STEM?

STEM schools have been popping up in school districts across the country, including the Fond du Lac School district in Wisconsin. The rise in popularity of these school has garnered interest from parents. What is STEM? How can it benefit my child? STEM schools are charter schools that focus specifically in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math. STEM programs are offered for students in every age groups, but common options are 3rd-5th grade schools, and 6th-8th grade schools. Keep in mind that this is just a way to categorize who should consider STEM, as students from each grade level are integrated in STEM classrooms. In STEM schools, students still learn core subjects and are held to state standards, but the curriculum focuses heavily on science, technology, engineering, and math, and other subjects are viewed largely by how they apply to these key four subject. Students in a STEM school use a hands-on and technological approach to learning. STEM programs are a great alternative education option for students who show proficiency and interest in the STEM subjects.
