Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Forest Hill District Curriculum

The geography curriculum is included under history. This topic is introduced by helping students understand general directional words, such as north, far, here and so on. After they show understanding for this type of word they progress to learning the topographical features that helped to settle their area. This is then expanded upon to explore the nation and other nations. By showing that there is a unity in what helps a culture decide to settle in one area, the students are able to see a unity with others around the world.

Geometry is a part of the mathematics curriculum at Forest Hill Schools. This course concentrates on the math that is involved with shapes. The students begin by learning the basic characteristics of simple shapes like triangles, squares and circles. As the students progress the shapes become more complex, as does the math surrounding them. The students discover how to find the perimeter, and area of shapes and how to find the diameter and radius of circles. They also study angles and how to use this to solve other equations. This study allows students to learn the problem-solving skills needed throughout their lives.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Middle School Social Studies

From the first day of school children begin to learn about social studies. Each grade has overall objectives that may differ from state to state. In sixth grade most students learn about Ancient Civilizations, including the roots of the Western civilizations. In this grade students learn the geography, climate, landmarks and about the people. Most schools include a unit about Mesopotamia, Greece, Rome, India and China. Students also become versed in using latitude and longitude to determine the location of a particular place as well. The manner in which information, goods, and ideas is disseminated from one geographic region to another is also explored, both in terms of how it was accomplished historically and how modern technology has improved cultural diffusion. With these topics in mind, parents can be prepared to help students understand very different worlds from the one they live in.
