Chalk Talk: Differences Between the SAT and ACT

The child that is interested in attending college is asked to take the ACT or the SAT, without knowing what the difference is between the two. The SAT is made up of 10 short sections with the longest section taking up 25 minutes. The ACT is a four section test with the longest one taking one hour. As far as overall time, students should allow four hours for the SAT and three for the ACT. Advantages for the SAT include the math section which covers 9th and 10th grade math. Students that enjoy reading will do well in the critical reading area. However, the SAT does penalize ¼ point for incorrect answers. The ACT does not penalize for wrong answers but it does have a science section that can be difficult to those that have difficulty with numbers and graphs and it includes trigonometry in a 60 minute section that has 60 questions. Overall, the information that is required from the results can determine which test should be.
