Chalk Talk: Building Self-Esteem

A child’s self-esteem can affect their success in life and in academics. Even in a parent’s busy life, there are ways to help a child feel better about themselves. Parents need to reassure children that it is normal to make mistakes. This should not be a time to think badly about themselves, instead realize that this is a moment to learn from. Parents should also notice what they are saying and try to speak in positive terms. This should apply in all aspects of their lives, including the way they think about themselves. Respect is also important. This is as easy as paying attention to what the child is saying, without interrupting. Giving the child responsibilities also can build self-esteem as they realize that the things they do help the family run smoothly and shows they are important to how the family lives.
