Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Fort Saskatchewan District Curriculum
In English Language Arts, students are taught reading and writing in an integrated fashion so that they have models for writing, and means for reflection of what they have read. Comprehension and analysis skills are central goals, and students respond to what they have read both orally and in writing. Students will be assessed through a variety of standardized tests and reading level assessments.
The design of each subject-area framework calls upon students to focus in on key topics, develop knowledge and skill sets, and then apply their learning to building deeper knowledge. Students are continually reviewing and learning new concepts, current concepts, and old concepts. This allows students to refresh older skills, practice current skills, and preview upcoming skills. Students are assessed daily on particular skills and assessed comprehensively after each unit of study.

Chalk Talk: Note-taking Strategies
One of the most important study strategies that help a student succeed, both on tests and on long-term memory of the content, is note-taking. One reason note-taking is so important is because of how the act of writing while listening, wherein the brain is doing two things at once, allows a student a better chance to truly 'get' the material. When the mind engages with a subject using more than one sense, the concepts is better embedded for the future. While taking notes, a student should not try to write down every word they hear, rather key words and phrases, as well as any questions they have during a lecture. Use shorthand writing so that you don’t get caught up writing too much for just one topic. Use a highlighter to mark parts of your notes will be on your homework or tests for easy reference later on. Notes should be read over both after the class and prior to any tests.
